Our Board

CYNZ is a subsidiary of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS). CYNZ is managed by the Executive Committee, appointed by the RCS Board. The Executive Committee reports to the Board which has governance responsibility for CYNZ. Their leadership and expertise guide both entities in promoting Commonwealth values and fostering youth engagement across New Zealand.

  • Darryl Stevens MNZM

    BOARD CHAIR

    Darryl has dedicated his career to promoting civics education and the Commonwealth in New Zealand. He led the National Student CHOGM from the early 1980s to 2010, helping over 2,000 high school students understand the Commonwealth's role. Darryl also secured Government support for Commonwealth Day observances.

    He served as Board Chair from 2014-2019 and is currently the Wellington branch President of the RCS. In 2013, Darryl was awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for his services to youth and the Commonwealth.

  • Paul Foster-Bell

    BOARD MEMBER

    Paul is an international relations expert and a post-graduate student at the University of Otago. He has served as Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and was elected as a List MP in 2013.

    Currently, Paul is the Business Development Manager (Culture, Society, and Economy) and the RCS Representative in Dunedin. He chairs the Trust Board of the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand.

    Paul enjoys theatre and is a registered marriage celebrant in New Zealand and Hawaii. He is a member of the Royal Numismatic Society of NZ and Monarchy NZ. He has a private pilot’s licence and interests in history, cooking, politics, and museology.

  • Karim Dickie

    BOARD MEMBER

    Karim is a Wellington-based international relations consultant. He studied film and media at Victoria University of Wellington and defense and international development at Massey University. Karim is the Executive Director of the Caribbean Council, which he founded to promote links between New Zealand and Caribbean countries. He is also the National President of the United Nations Association of New Zealand and has collaborated with many global stakeholders.

    Karim is passionate about the Commonwealth and fostering engagement between New Zealand and other Commonwealth member states.

  • Jan Henderson

    BOARD MEMBER

    Jan is a senior diplomat who has had a distinguished career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. She has served as New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India, Ambassador to Turkey and inaugural High Commissioner to the Caribbean. Earlier overseas assignments were to Washington DC, Thailand and the Solomon Islands. Jan has also served as Head of the Chief Executive’s Office and Director of the Environment Division, where she was directly involved in International Whaling Commission issues. She is currently the New Zealand International Whaling Commissioner. Jan also teaches diplomatic tradecraft in New Zealand and the Pacific. Her career is marked by significant contributions to international diplomacy and environmental advocacy.

  • Josh Chandulal-Mackay

    Josh Chandulal-Mackay is a passionate leader dedicated to public service and community engagement. He is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society and serves as a Whanganui District Councillor. Josh's work focuses on fostering community development and representing the interests of his constituents. His commitment to public service and leadership within the community is making a significant impact in Whanganui.

  • Daniel Gamboa

    BOARD MEMBER

    Daniel Gamboa is a dedicated advocate with a strong focus on youth and refugee issues. He is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society and currently serves as the CEO of the New Zealand National Refugee Youth Council. Daniel's work is marked by his commitment to empowering young refugees and fostering community engagement. His leadership continues to make a significant impact on the lives of refugee youth in New Zealand.
